Succession has been a “buzzword” for agricultural solicitors, advisors and accountants in recent years. However, whilst there is various free guidance across the internet, it does not compare to a face-to-face meeting with a qualified professional, to discuss individual situations directly.
Brexit is still looming and it seems there is a great deal of concern surrounding the farming community. At Agri Advisor we appreciate no two farms, or farming businesses are the same, consequently a broad-brush approach to succession planning does not necessarily work.
As a firm that originated in Wales, we have worked extensively with Farming Connect who offer Welsh Farmers what is known as a “Succession Surgery”. This takes the form of an hour-long meeting with a qualified solicitor, specialising in agriculture and succession planning, which we follow up with an extensive, bespoke letter to the farming business, with tailored advice. Thereafter, the farm business has this take-away advice providing them with next steps, points of contact, and thoughts on moving the business forward. The aim of these meetings is to try to start the ball rolling in whichever direction is appropriate, that may be a to do list of information to gather, matters to check up on, or the catalyst for some internal family discussions.
We would now like to offer these Succession Surgeries to Herefordshire and Shropshire Farmers, should they believe it will be a benefit to them, at a discounted rate. Wherever possible the surgeries will be held in our office, which is located just outside Eardisley, in one of the former Council farms. The office has been open for just over 12 months, where we have been handling a range of agricultural advice including, provision of partnership agreements, landlord and tenant matters, grant and stewardship applications and appeals, planning matters as well as wills and conveyancing.
The surgeries are informal, and the number of participants is not limited, it is a great opportunity to speak extensively with a solicitor specialising in agriculture about the farming business. The solicitor will then write to the farmer, thereafter, summarising the matters discussed and setting out the next steps. This letter will provide a great deal of information that can be reflected on, in the farmers’ own time. We have the following 2 days available for surgeries in the New Year; Wednesday 22nd January and Wednesday 5th February.
