Glastir Small Grants – Carbon

  • Posted

There are a number of Glastir Small Grants open throughout various times during 2021 and they will concentrate on a variety of environmentally beneficial themes. To be eligible for any of these grants you must have a CRN, the land must be agricultural, and the applicant must have full management responsibility and control over the land up until the contract end date to enable you to fulfil the obligations of the scheme. In order to apply, you must submit an Expression of Interest via RPW Online before being selected after an assessment process. However, if 80% of the value for all Capital Works Projects across a whole theme are not completed, then the applicant will be excluded from applying for all Glastir Small Grants themes for two years.

The Glastir Small Grants Carbon is currently open until the 19th February. It is a programme of capital works available to farming businesses across Wales to carry out projects that will help to lock up Carbon. Capital Works items will be identified as ‘Main’ and ‘Supportive’ works which, together, form a ‘Project’. The project will then be the main capital work which will address the theme objectives and then the supportive capital works which will allow the main capital work to be under taken.

The Carbon theme offers capital works that have been chosen for their broad and general environmental benefits and their ability to deliver on the ambition to increase carbon sequestration by the Welsh Government. Carbon Sequestration is the long-term storage of carbon dioxide and has been proposed as a way to slow the atmospheric accumulation of greenhouse gases. All available activities have been chosen for their ability to contribute to increasing carbon sequestration and every eligible land parcel in Wales has been assigned a score for each available activity. This score is made up of a Glastir Small Grants Foundation Score and Target Objectives. Each land parcel has been awarded a different number of points depending on the specific activity and the combination of target objectives it overlaps with. Some field parcels will be marked as N/A either because that field parcel is not eligible, or because certain activities are not eligible if they could be potentially damaging to an environmental feature.

When selection is completed, outcome letters will be issued on your RPW Online Account stating whether your EOI has been ‘selected’ or ‘not selected’. Once validated, contracts will be generated giving 21 days to either accept or decline the project via RPW Online. Work can then commence once the contract has been accepted and the deadline for claims and geo-tagged photos is 31st March 2022.
